After gaining a politics degree in Manchester, and having worked as a betting shop manager, I saw an advertisement for what seemed like the perfect position for me. I applied and was given the opportunity to join the trading team. During my first twelve months, I learned the ropes of novelty trading and risk management, worked in customer support, and did a stint in the betting in running department. I quickly built up a range of skills, and gained an insight into the technical operation of the company, and also it's ethos. The opportunity for promotion soon arose, and I was entrusted with the planning and operation of novelty and politics trading. Novelty betting is an area that is defined by the company's brand values - fun, fair and friendly. We have to be responsive to all events in politics, current affairs, popular culture, and not so popular culture. We cover everything, from the high profile to the bizarre - general elections, X Factor, Volcano Holiday Hedging, and even who murdered Archie in Eastenders. It's a bit of a cliche, but no two days are ever the same. In novelty trading, we are also engaged in meeting the company's PR goals. It's been fantastic for me to work so closely with the world class Paddy Power PR team. Being involved with their memorable campaigns and day to day operation has given me an insight I can't imagine getting anywhere else. There's a collaborative work ethic here, and the encouragement to approach anyone from any department if you have an idea that could improve something. I’ve taken advantage of this flexibility and have been able to push the boundaries of the job description I began with. Paddy Power is constantly moving forwards, and it's great to be part of a company that's always one step ahead. |
