I studied Business in DCU followed by a Masters in Marketing just for good measure. I followed this with a year in an Internet start-up and then worked as marketing manager for a web agency before deciding it was time to get serious about my career! My starting points were to only apply for jobs that ticked all the right boxes for me. Marketing Exec in the Marketing Department fit the profile perfectly – Challenging (Tick), Fun (Tick), Innovative (Tick), Licence to be creative (Tick), Variety (Tick), Good Marketing Reputation (Tick), Market Leader (Tick). 1 CV & 3 interviews later I found myself employed as the second person in the Irish Marketing Department. It’s been a great journey since then. I’ve had the opportunity to seriously sharpen my marketing skills at the same time as having a lot of fun. Since I joined in 2004, I’ve worked on some truly amazing projects and alongside some gifted marketeers. Creativity and innovation coupled with meticulous planning and attention to detail is the bedrock of what we do as a department where even the smallest function is questioned if it’s not doing something different. From this platform I’ve had the opportunity to suggest a lot of fun ideas in the full knowledge that if they’re innovative they’ll happen. From persuading TopGear to come to Shelbourne Park, to changing our shop front signage from Paddy Power to O’Bama Power to celebrate the arrival of the US President, there’s huge reward in being able to conceive your own ideas and be allowed to see them through to completion. I’ve grown up a bit and nowadays look after the Irish & UK sponsorship function but still have time to have some fun. I’m kept busy creating strategy, implementing plans, managing budgets and ensuring our sponsorships deliver optimal return on investment. In the environment we work in you’re only ever one thought away from being immersed in another fun project. The company has built up a great atmosphere that means that everybody is willing to help you in any way they can. In an industry as fast moving as this, and a company that moves even faster, the feeling of being able to get things done is massively liberating. There have been times when my job puts me into crazy situations (e.g. dressed up as a priest on an Island off the West Coast of Ireland at the Father Ted festival) where when you take stock you’re truly grateful you didn’t just resign yourself to a job marketing business to business loans for a bank (No offence to B2B Bank Marketeers who I’m sure do a great job!). |
